John Redding Goes to Sea, the first short story published by Zora Neale Hurston was published in the May 1921 issue of the Stylus literary magazine at Howard University. In the store we meet John Redding who is dying to leave his hometown and explore what lies beyond. On his journey he encounters many road blocks such as his family and his new wife. Ultimately, John gets his wish although it wasn’t how he envisioned.
