Brown Girl Self-Care is a space where Black women come to honor our humanity and reclaim our power in a world that takes us for granted. Here, choosing ourselves—our healing, our joy, and our rest—is an act of radical resistance and deep self-love.
In this episode, we’re exploring the emotional toll that masking takes on Black women. We’ll start with a few deep breaths to create a calming space and then dive into my journey of setting boundaries and acknowledging my emotions, reminding us that healing can bring up some friction.
We’ll also unpack the societal pressures Black women face to mask their true feelings, using Angela Bassett’s reaction at the Oscars as an example. This conversation critiques cultural expectations that demand we hide our pain to keep others comfortable, and instead encourages us to embrace our humanity, honor our emotions, and create spaces where we can be authentic.
Let’s take this journey together—we are worthy of this care.
