In our experience, the health care system focuses primarily on the babies during the postpartum period, treating the health of new mothers as an afterthought. This certainly shouldn’t be the case as the first three months after a child is born, or the “Fourth Trimester,” brings on lots of physical and emotional changes for new mothers. And more recently, women have been contending with these changes amidst a global pandemic, amplifying the emotional toll.
While there are cultures around the world that observe rituals to support new moms, here in the US, women feel pressured to recuperate rapidly from pregnancy… hence the boom of the “snapback.” Snapback not only physically, but also to daily activities and responsibilities in personal and professional lives.
On this episode, we are joined by Dr. Hamil, a graduate of the University of the West Indies twice over — firstly with a degree in Psychology, which led to a career in counselling and adolescent rehabilitation as a Probation Aftercare Officer. Secondly, with a medical degree which has led to over 10 years of experience in public and private practice, and primary and tertiary care. Doc helps us navigate the difficulties moms face during the Fourth Trimester, including how to differentiate between baby blues and postpartum depression, when to seek help or suggest help for others, how to navigate friendships during this period, how to tackle the “snapback culture,” as well as how the pandemic has exacerbated these experiences.
