S E1210: In Class with Carr, Ep. 210: “When to Rebel/When to Repair: How Do We Choose?”

podcast April 22, 2025

Background

Similar to Benjamin Mays, Dorie Ladner (1943-2024) used to say she was “born to rebel.” She fought for human rights her whole life, transforming Social Structures while also centering her Ways of Knowing and the Governance formations she was raised in as an African person in Mississippi, in the Civil Rights Movement and in global liberation movements. Many US debates about reparations, such as Nicole Hannah-Jones article in this Sunday’s New York Times Magazine, center what Black people believe that the US “owes” Africans descended from US enslavement. Rebelling against an oppressive Social Structure and Repairing oneself and/or community are not the same. When do we choose one or the other?
