In 2018 I interviewed the legendary actor Michael K Williams about his HBO documentary Raised In the System which gave him a chance to talk about criminal justice and also about his incarcerated nephew Dominic who did over 20 years inside. It was a powerful interview—we talk about prison, drug addiction, acting, the Wire, the Night Of, and Dominic who had been released days earlier and was there at the interview with us. It was an honor to spend time with Michael—he was an intense freedom fighter who cared deeply about criminal justice reform. His intensity comes through in this conversation.
