Ciiru Kamau – My Journey to Miss Kenya Washington USA 2023

The world of beauty pageants is sometimes notable for spectacle and drama, but in recent years some competitors are trying to show viewers that beauty is more than skin deep. The Miss Washington USA 2023 featured a roster of talented and driven young women vying for a scholarship and a platform for a cause. Ciiru Kamau, the Kenyan born winner, devoted significant time—about an hour and a half of practice—each day leading up to the competition. Ciiru is a recording artist, dancer, theater actress, and entrepreneur formerly based in Los Angeles, California but recently relocated to Seattle, Wa . She uses her skills to address social justice issues. She has worked with organizations such as Barbers Against Hunger, which feeds families in Seattle, Washington. She was also part of the documentary The Bound – Africans vs African Americans by Peres Awino. Ciiru, said. “I think this goes to show it’s about what you can bring to the community through your talent and through your intelligence.
