Who Makes It? Why?

What is it that allows certain people to consistently overcome obstacles and make it to new levels? And what is it that causes others to given into the expectation set by cultural/environmental/ and neighborhood norms? Or status quo?

I have heard and used to think that some people just get lucky, some people just get breaks, some; it was just their destiny…..
