Part 1: A Tale of Two Black Mothers: How They Fought for Their Own & Babies’ Lives During & After Labor-An Inside Look Into Black Maternal Health in the U.S.

This Black History Month and Valentines’ Day, I want to put the spotlight on something that’s very important to me, Black Maternal Health. I’m releasing two episodes today, dedicated that very topic. Maternal health has long been a concern in America for women of all color. The CDC has found that about 700 women die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. Every year, however, black women fare the worst dying two and a half times more often than white or hispanic women.

Part 1 is the story of Daneen Sekoni. After enduring 20 years of fertility issues,  Daneen and her supportive husband welcomed two beautiful babies, in two years, in her 40s!  As a senior policy director in healthcare, she shockingly found herself in the company of other mothers, especially those of color who find themselves caring for a new life while advocating to save their own.
