Rashaan Peek has over 20 years of experience working in, and with, nonprofits to help them advance their respective causes. She has experienced and seen firsthand what an uphill battle it is to use nonprofit as a vehicle to create systemic and lasting change.
While she continues to celebrate and support nonprofits, her advice to aspiring change-makers is usually not to start one.
Instead, she recommends starting a business and to use it as a tool to create the change they want to see in the world, while in the process creating job opportunities, reducing the wealth gap, and ultimately changing the dynamics of the system.
My perspective is that many people choose the nonprofit route because there’s this misconception that businesses can’t do good in the world. But I believe that the purpose of a business is fundamentally to enhance the human experience— in big and small ways. It is, or at least it can be, a powerful tool to improve the human condition.
We are fortunate to have examples like Yvon Chouinard and Patagonia to prove that profit and purpose do not have to be on opposite ends of a spectrum, but instead, they can be two sides of the same coin.
