Locked in on this episode of Black in Sports, EJ and MH was joined by budding fashion star Rodney P Watkins III The CEO of Blackletics discussed his upbringing in Detroit, athletic career, success in the military and the vision behind his brand.
From growing up in household with all women, Rodney shared how he first started in athletics. Being from Detroit, he naturally became a fan of the Detroit Pistons with Chauncey Billups being the player he most looked up to. Rodney also gave his take on why Pistons great Ben Wallace should be Hall of Famer. Rodney eventually took his competitive edge to excel in track, with the hurdles being his race. From the hurdles to the pool, Rodney discussed taking on competitive Swimming his Senior year in high school.
Rodney joined the Navy after high school and filled EJ and MH on the good and bad in his time serving the country. Rodney mentioned his favorite assignment, location and how quickly he moved up the ranks. His experience visiting other countries gave him the vision behind Blackletics.
Blackletics is an Athletic Wear and equipment brand that looks to share the story of the Black Athlete with the world. The main goal is becoming one of the leading Apparel Accessories and Sports Equipment companies with a large portion of profits being cycled back into the Black Community. Rodney shouts out his wife as one of the leaders in the marketing campaign for the company and continued growth. Rodney also shared how the NCAA name, image and likeness rules has impacted Blackletics with HBCU athletes.
