Today’s interview is with Trevor Fay, the founder of Kopa. Kopa is a fractional real estate investing platform that allows investors to own pieces of real estate from anywhere.

Trevor was inspired to create Kopa in 2011 as a result of his experience as a university professor in rural Brazil—amid a population sorely in need of economic help. $2.5 billion worth of experience later, Trevor realized he could democratize the real estate investment world, leading to the founding of the Kopa platform.

1) It doesn’t matter who owns the property—the capital markets will dictate what you build. In order to make the capital market more democratic and participatory, Trevor essentially wants to turn real estate into a dividend stock available for investment by anyone, for as low as $5.

2) When deciding to invest in a real estate fund, look first at its structure (comingled or individual assets) and the fund’s terms, which should include a list of fees and expenses. Second, consider the potential of the property (and the ability of the property owner) to make money.

3) Investing in a property comes with a lot of management, and you alone have to find the property at its lowest value and do the work that it takes to maximize your profit. On the other hand, Kopa’s assets are already performing, not to mention you can diversify your capital across multiple properties instead of putting everything into a single property.
