For today’s episode, Tyrell and Daphne welcome Dr. Zakiya Luna, a Dean’s Distinguished Professorial Scholar in the Department of Sociology at Washington University in St. Louis. They begin the conversation by discussing whether and how the reproductive rights conversation has evolved (42:30) as well as myths and misconceptions surrounding reproductive issues (45:15). Next, they discuss her recently published book, Reproductive Rights as Human Rights: Women of Color and the Fight for Reproductive Justice (48:15). Specifically, they explore what it means to achieve reproductive justice, the unique issues women of color face within the movement, and how women of color are helping to push the conversation forward. They close the episode by discussing her co-edited volume, Black Feminist Sociology: Perspectives and Praxis (1:02:05), her perspective on a pop culture controversy (1:06:50), and the impact of Black women on broader social movements (1:13:45).
