EP 1: In The Beginning…

podcast October 25, 2022

In the inaugural episode of the UK Black Pride Time Capsule Podcast, we take you back in time to discover the roots of the worlds biggest celebration for all the
LGBTQIA+ folks of the Black and Asian diasporas.

Co-founder of UK Black Pride Lady Phyll Akua Opoku-Gyimah – better known in LGBTQIA+ Black & Brown community as Lady Phyll – looks back on the legendary coach trip to Southend on Sea that started it all, honouring the work of the Black lesbian women who led the way. Without their strength in the face of adversity, UK Black Pride might never have come to be.

You’ll also hear from festivalgoers at UK Black Pride 2022, who share their feelings about this unique annual gathering that holds space for thousands of
people to let their hair down and be their authentic selves… to truly dance like nobody’s watching.

After all the episodes have been published, the series will, quite literally, be in the can. The audio files will be sealed in a capsule and buried for future generations in the Olympic Park in London, where the UK Black Pride celebrations take place.
