Black in Sports Podcast welcomed HBO ‘Ballers’ star Donovan W. Carter II aka DC on this episode. Prior to ‘Ballers’, Donovan starred at the UCLA which eventually led him to the Oakland Raiders Mini Camp.
The conversation began with Donovan’s up bring is the Los Angeles Valley. Originally born in Washington, D.C. Donovan moved to LA at 8 and descried the transition similar to Mike from ‘The Wood’. Donovan and EJ talked about his stardom in high school being 1 of 8 players to receive Division 1 scholarship offers from Birmingham High School, in California.
At UCLA, Donovan transition from linebacker to defensive tackle. Donovan gave a brief scouting report on his style of play which led to a conversation about NFL great Aaron Donald. While playing at UCLA Donovan described how real the rivalry is with crosstown rival USC. After college, Donovan continued his dream to the NFL and earned a shot with the Raiders.
While his time with Raiders was cut short, Donovan described the transition from football to his current career. In a topic that is dear to Black and Sports, EJ and MH shared with Donovan the inspiration behind his story and transition. Being a man of faith, Donovan said his relationship with God helped push him through.
His faith eventually led him to auditing for a role in ‘Ballers’. From networking, Donovan thought the opportunity with Ballers was being an extra. After 10 auditions some including LaLa Anthony, Regina Hall he was chose as a full time cast member earning the role as ‘Vernon Littlefield’. The iconic show lasted five seasons and Donovan shared some of the great times with the cast which included ‘The Rock’ Dwayne Johnson.
Donovan also learned some things from his character ‘Vernon Littlefield’ which was gaming also shared the difference when it comes to family. Donovan now applies the skills/knowledge from the show to one of his new passions E-Sports. He described it as doing what he’s always done, just pressing record.
