I AM NASCAR | SEASON 2: EPISODE 5
RCR pit crew member Derrell Edwards joins Brandon Marshall, Channing Crowder, Fred Taylor and Dion “Rocko” Williams in episode 5 of I AM NASCAR. The five discuss everything from racing, Diversity and innovating the world of NASCAR.
Darrell would have never thought he would have grown up to be a successful member of a pit crew team. HE found his way to the sport after a successful career with the High Point University men’s basketball team in North Carolina. He earned an internship with RCR in his final year of school where he met Rocko Williams who led NASCAR's Drive for Diversity program and the rest was history.
Growing up Derrell was always told in order to make it out of the hood he would have to make it to the NFL or NBA. Darrell is making it his obligation to educated and show the culture that there are other avenues and opportunities in life to pursue.
Derrell Edwards would go on to become the first African-American over-the-wall pit crew member to win the Daytona 500. Derrell's competitive nature and determination led him to become one of the most well known trailblazers in NASCAR.
Rocko talks about being nicked-named "Pioneer of Pit row" and what it was like being a member on pit row before his retirement. He goes on to tell the story of how NASCAR implemented the
"Rocko Rule" after he introduced innovative techniques within pit row.
Wrapping things up Derrell and Rocko talk about the opportunities that NASCAR has opened up to them outside of the track. Derrell goes on to stress the importance of being uncomfortable and opening your mindset to new and different opportunities.
