(#PreciseThinking) Beggin’ or Building? : The Deion Sanders Controversy

The recent hiring of NFL Hall of Famer Deion “Prime Time” Sanders to be the head football coach at the University of Colorado has triggered tremendous controversy on many levels. Jason Whitlock, host of the podcast FEARLESS, blames African people for driving Sanders away from Jackson State (HBCU) into the arms of a school in a Power 5 conference and claims that African people are “begging for entry” instead of building for themselves. Yet, Whitlock fails to hold Prime Time to the same standard.

This episode poses several questions that theWE  (African/Melanated/Indigenous/Black/Moorish)  people must ask and answer:

1. Do African people want liberation or better treatment on the plantation?

2. Does Prime owe an apology for manipulating African people’s cultural and spiritual morays?

3. Is Prime a “sellout,” or is he who he’s always been?

4. Should African people support one of their own solely on Blackness?

5. Are African people so obsessed with “gettin’ the bag” that values and principles are an afterthought?

6.  What lessons are we teaching our youth when we make them swallow our hypocrisy and tell them, “it’s the way of the world”?

7. Malcolm or Martin?
