Disclaimer – The Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass at Momocon 2024 was cancelled on May 20th.
Hoo boy… May 2024 was Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and one actual play at Momocon… fumbled. Hard. The Obojima: Tales From the Tall Grass was advertised as a ‘Studio Ghibli Inspired’ live actual play that would feature at the event, which involved no asian and/or Japanese players. So, Jeremy, Navaar Jackson and Candace The Magnificent take a dive into how the organisers responded to the torrent of criticism (badly), why they fell on the wrong side of the appropriation/appreciation divide, and how to respectfully produce an Actual Play with a fantasy world built with real-world cultural significance.
