S6E2 – The Rundown | HISS, Big Foot, and “I Don’t Unbend My Elbows Barbie”

In this rundown episode, Jenn and Daren catch up on important happenings from the last few weeks. In the first segment, they recap the high points of Megan Thee Stallion’s “HISS” and Nicki Minaj’s failure of a response “Big Foot.”

In the second segment, Jenn and Daren highlight the wins Black folx took home from the 2024 Grammys and Oscars, celebrating the achievements of artists such as Victoria Monet, Coco Jones, and Samara Joy. In turn they question the status of a music industry where Killa Mike wins top rap honors and Jay-Z is awarded a Dr. Dre Global Impact award. On the film side, they lament an industry still awarding Black women for playing mammies (Da’Vine Joy Randolph from “The Holdovers”), finding a home for “I Don’t Unbend My Elbows Barbie” (aka Issa Rae), and allowing Tyler Perry to continue making movies like Tyler Perry’s “Mea Culpa.”

In the third segment, they close things out on a positive note, spotlighting a recent $100M award granted to Spelman College and a donation made in the name of supporting Black college students from Lloyd & Janice Dong.
