Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.
On the January 24, 2021 edition of Black Canada Talking™, our guest was Keziah Myers.
Keziah Myers believes in the skills and uniqueness of this country, and knows that there is so much music and artistic talent yet to be discovered. Currently in a cross-collective role, Keziah works with both SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) and Re:Sound. Keziah’s main role is to educate media and non-media organizations about the importance of music licensing, and facilitate the initial process of getting songwriters their royalties. Prior to this, Keziah held the position of Operations Lead for the A&R team at SOCAN. She was instrumental in changing processes, and enabling international offices to better serve 150,000 members. Keziah was also the Label Operations Manager at G7 Records/Universal Music, and a publicist at a music-entertainment marketing firm in New York.
Keziah previously held the position of Operations Lead for the A&R team at SOCAN where she was instrumental in ensuring that hiring was reflective of the culture and creators. She updated systems, changed processes, and enabled international offices to better serve 150 000 members. Keziah has also held positions in Label Operations Management, Publicity, sat on Entertainment & Music Organization Boards, adjudicated as part of FACTOR (The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings) and JUNO juries, and has been a guest presenter for Colleges and High schools in Toronto.
As a part of a major music movement in Canada, Keziah has taken opportunities anytime they presented themselves. These opportunities have allowed her to be able to live on 3 continents, and travel to over 30 countries. Keziah has worked with the likes of Drake, Maroon 5, Kim Davis, DSVN, Ghetto Concept, Chrystina Sayers (Girlicious), Savannah Re and so many more.
During our conversation, Ms. Myers talked about:
– Some of her journey in the music industry including spending time in New York, working with Universal Music/G7 Records, working at SOCAN and ReSound and learing various aspects of the music industry – Changes in the music industry during her journey – Being part of an initiative to have increased Black representation especially at the corporate level in the Canadian music industry – The lack of diversity in the Canadian music industry at the corporate level – The importance of an artist knowing the music business – Her creating an online knowledge hub for artists in the Canadian music industry – The effect that the death of George Floyd has had on the Canadian music industry – Her call to action for who are outside and inside the Canadian music industry
