A Maryland man was sentenced Monday to life in prison for the 2018 murder of his wife and a subsequent attempt to cover it up. Keith Smith, 55, was given the maximum sentence of life in prison for the murder of his wife, plus three years for a deadly weapon with intent to injure. His wife Jacquelyn Smith was stabbed to death in 2018. Keith Smith was the beneficiary of a life insurance policy on his wife, Jacquelyn Smith, the 11 News I-Team has learned from multiple sources. The insurance policy amount was at least $500,000.

Keith Smith and Valeria Smith were arrested Sunday near the Texas border with Mexico. Police said the pair will be brought back to Maryand on March 20. They waived extradition Monday. Smith was convicted in December of first-degree murder and deadly weapon with intent to injure after a week-long trial that saw his daughter testify against him. Valeria Smith pleaded guilty in September 2019 to accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
